Can Your Gut Bacteria Predict Psychopathic Traits? A Strange New Study Says Yes

- Prevotella: A common genus of bacteria found in both the mouth and the gut.
- Allisonella: Another bacterial group detected in both the mouth and gut samples.
- Cloacibacillus evryensis: A bacterium found specifically in the gut.
These microbes are known to interact with inflammatory pathways and produce metabolic byproducts that communicate directly with the central nervous system via the vagus nerve.
The Catch: Chicken or the Egg?
Before you start worrying that a bad lunch could turn you into a psychopath, the researchers emphasized a massive caveat: correlation does not equal causation. This was a cross-sectional study, meaning it took a snapshot of the participants at a single point in time. It cannot prove that gut bacteria actively drive bad behavior.
In fact, the relationship is highly likely to be the exact opposite.
People who score higher in psychopathic traits often experience different biological and lifestyle patterns. These can include:
- Different dietary and eating habits.
- Variations in sleep patterns.
- Altered levels of hormones like testosterone and cortisol.
- Distinct physiological stress responses.
These lifestyle, hormonal, and stress factors directly influence the physical environment of our digestive systems. In other words, a highly specific personality type and lifestyle might naturally cultivate a bodily environment that these three specific bacteria happen to love. The mind shapes the gut, rather than the gut controlling the mind.
